The North and East Midlands area of Great Britain has a proud industrial history, much of which is bound up in the history of the railways of the country. Situared in the heart of the North and East Midlands is one of the country's greatest coalfields, the very lifeblood of the steam railway. Many famous companies served the area, norably the London and North Western Railway, the Great Central Railway and the Midland Railway. Today many of their steam locomotives can still be seen hard at work on both the preserved railways and the main lines of the Midlands as the great great railway presevation movement has striven to keep their memories alive.
