The first public passenger railway in the world, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, still sees heavy traffic today. Its many branches and ricals, north of the Mersey to the Scottish Borders, have been the haunts of the great cariety of British Diesel lovomotive types which include classes 20, 31, 37, 40, 47, 50 and 55.
Exammples of these are seen at work in the final two decades of th e20th Century. We also take a cicular tour from Liverpool to Manchester via Carlisle with a heavy concentration on coal traffic.
