In this 'In Rehearsal' programme the highly acclaimed conductor Christoph von Dohnányi is seen working with the Philharmonia, one of the world's great orchestras, on "Haydn's Symphony No. 88 in G". Recording this, the cameras were witnessing part of the process of development of a new relationship between an orchestra and its Music Director.

Dohnányi himself expands on his approach to rehearsals, his thoughts on communicating with an orchestra and how the mastery of technical details precedes artistic interpretation. He also talks about Haydn and his music, which is, he explains, extremely complex and difficult.
