Soli Deo Gloria's DVD of St. Matthew Passion (Matthäus Passion) shines a supreme light on this rarely performed sacred masterpiece. Bach wrote the St. Matthew Passion at the height of his creative powers in 1727. It was first performed on a Good Friday in the famous Thomaskirche in Leipzig, revised and again performed on March 30th, 1736.
This work recounts the dramatically story of the capture and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Using the words of the Holy Scriptures and accompanied by the poetic interjections of the chorus it forms a profound, dramatic, lyrical and contemplative work. Because of the magnitude of this piece J. S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion is a unique depiction of the suffering and death of Christ.
In July 2011, John Nelson conducted the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Schola Cantorum of Oxford, the Maitrise de Paris, Christophe Coin and famous soloists such as Werner Güra, Stehen Morscheck, Lucy Crowe, Christine Rice, Nicolas Phan and Matthew Brook, in a live concert of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Basilica Cathedral Saint-Denis near Paris - a unique monumental masterpice of Gothic art where the Kings of France were buried.
