From the time of her operatic debut in 1910 to her farewell in 1951, Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976) was recognized as a supreme singing actress and recitalist. One of the highlights of her career was her close realtionship with Richard Strauss, creating roles in no less than three of his operas. After her retirement from the stage in 1951, Lehmann "retired" to an active teaching career.
In 1961, KQED San Francisco filmed a series of Lehmann's master classes at the Music Academy of the West for National Educational Television (Thirteen/WNET). In the course of these classes, Lehmann offers important interpretive insights, shares some of her life story, and even perform several passages with singular expressive force, albeit in a baritone "sprechstimme" (she herself candidly quips, "I have always in my life done things very thoroughly, so I lost also my voice thoroughly".) This second volume, devoted to operatic scenes, includes Lehmann's priceless demonstration/performance of the Marschallin's Monologue from "Der Rosenkavalier".
Over the years, Lehmann's students included Rose Bampton, Eleanor Steber, Grace Bumbry, Maralin Niska, and Benita Valente, as well as Marilyn Horne, who now heads the vocal departement at the Music Academy of the West.
