One of the most recognizable element of Native expression is the Pow-wow. But very few people outside of the culture understand it. They do not understand the significance of the songs and the dance behind Pow-wow; they do not understand the rites and ceremonies contained within a Pow-wow. They do not understand the meaniong of the clans, or why Indian people dance. Here, we explore the true meaning, beyond the feathers and beads. Culture lives within the people; it is expressed through those who practice and participate in these celebrations.
Episode 7: Pow-wow rock
Expressing themselves in the White Man's world, Indian musicians have adapted the traditional music into a new style, which has found its way into the mainstream.
Using her music to propel native issues into the mainstream, Buffy Sainte-Marie shares the special place her music has within the industry, and her role as a trailblazer within the mainstream music industry.
Keith Secola's "NDN Cars" is a song about the Pow-wow and incorporates a Pow-wow beat, Keith and his Wild Band of Indians perform a Round Dance with the audience at their lives gigs, recreating the atmosphere of the Pow-wow in cities and towns across the nation.
Known for their unusual harmonies and wide vocal and musical range. Ulali, an a-capella trio, has created a new genre of Native music and inspired the creation of other Native women's groups.
