Set in Roman-occupied Gaul shortly after its conquest by Julius Caesar, Vincenzo Bellini's operatic masterpiece is famous for its demanding title-role and the popular aria "Casta diva".
Norma tells the tale of a Druid high priestess who breaks her vow of chastity out of Love for the Roman Proconsul - only to be abandoned by him after he falls in love with a younger priestess. Norma rouses her people to rise up against the foreign invaders before finally sacrificing herself upon a blazing pyre in penance for her sins.
Director Boris Airapetian has taken his stage production out of the opera house into the open air of his native Armenia, turning Norma into a full-length feature film shot entirely on location around the ancient Roman temple of Garni.
