Set in Virginia City, Nevada, it told the story of the Cartwrights, owners of a nearly 600,000 acre ranch - The Ponderosa (names after the ponderosa pines growing there).
Starring Lorne Greene as Ben Cartwright, a three time widower; Pernell Roberts as eldest son Adam; big Dan Blocker as son Hoss; Michael Landon as the youngest son, Little Joe; Ray Teal as Sheriff Roy Coffee, the Virginia City lawman who frequently called on the Cartwrights for assistance; and Victor Sen Yung as Hop Sing, the cook.
